Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with a group of grade school teachers about financial literacy.
It’s not their usual subject—so I was glad to step in and help.
As part of the session, I created simple slides with kid-friendly phrases that they could use when talking about money. Here are some of the common myths and ideas coming from kids:
Talking about money is bad
It’s greedy to want more money
Saving money is only for adults
Money gives you so many problems
But as we go through the slides, one slide about life insurance struck me the most: “Why life insurance? Because there are some things you cannot save in a jar.”
Why? Because it explains something that is so true in such a simple phrase.
“Why life insurance? Because there are some things you cannot save in a jar.”
Let’s do the Math…
If I were to save Php 100,000 a year—i think that is a good goal —it would take me 50 years to save Php 5 million.
Fifty. Years.
And we all know how real life works, I doubt I can ever save Php 5 million.
Discipline Matters…
Long before I even get close to Php 1 million, that savings might already be gone—turned into a car, a down payment on a condo, a new business idea, or some other reward or “investment.” A trip to Japan would be nice!
In other words, the jar has a hole in it.
That’s why life insurance matters. It’s not just about how much you earn or how well you save—it’s about creating discipline where there is none.
Life insurance does something many of us struggle to do:
It locks in a lump sum and keeps it away from our daily spending habits, temptations, or emergencies—so that it’s there for the one thing that truly matters: your family
In a strange but wonderful way, life insurance gives your loved ones that Php 5 million you couldn’t save—and ensures it stays intact. That’s its true power.
And if Php 5 million sounds like too small a target?
Try this: Aim for 10x your annual income. That’s the recommended coverage amount for most people.
It’s not about getting rich—it’s about replacing the value you provide if you’re no longer around. It’s about protecting the dreams that go far beyond you.
